How to Factory Reset Schlage Locks and Restore Default Programming Codes

Resetting your Schlage lock to its factory settings is essential when you’ve lost your programming code or wish to reconfigure your lock. This process erases all custom settings, restoring the default Programming and User Codes. Below are detailed instructions for various Schlage models:


General Information

  • Default Codes Location: The default Programming Code and User Codes are typically found on a sticker:

    • inside the lock, beneath the battery cover.
    • On the back of the user manual.

  • Important Note: Performing a factory reset will erase all custom codes and settings. After resetting, you’ll need to reprogram your lock using the default codes.


Resetting Schlage BE365, FE575, FE595, FE695 & BE375 Models

  1. Disconnect the Battery:

    • Remove the interior cover to access the battery compartment.
    • Disconnect the 9-volt battery.
  2. Press the Schlage Button:

    • Press and release the Schlage button once.
  3. Reconnect the Battery:

    • Within 10 seconds of pressing the Schlage button, reconnect the battery.
  4. Initiate Factory Reset:

    • Press and hold the Schlage button until it illuminates green and the lock beeps (approximately 10 seconds).
  5. Verify Reset:

    • Enter one of the default 4-digit User Codes.
    • If the lock operates, the reset was successful.

Resetting Schlage Connect (BE468/469) & DE265 Models

  1. Remove the Battery Pack:

    • Slide the battery cover upward to remove it.
    • Disconnect and remove the battery pack

  2. Press and Hold the Schlage Button:

    • On the exterior keypad, press and hold the Schlage button.
    • For DE265 models, press and hold the “Set” button instead.
  3. Reconnect the Battery Pack:

    • While holding the Schlage (or “Set”) button, reconnect the battery pack.
    • Complete the Reset:
    • Release the Schlage button.
    • The Schlage button and the green checkmark will flash three times, indicating a successful reset.
  4. Auto-Handing Process:

    • Enter one of the default User Codes to initiate the auto-handing process, allowing the lock to determine its orientation.

Resetting Schlage Encode (BE489) Model

  1. Access the Reset Button

    • Remove the interior cover to expose the reset button, located near the thumbturn.
  2. Initiate Factory Reset:

    • Press and hold the reset button.
    • The LED will flash red; continue holding until the LED stops flashing (approximately 10 seconds).
  3. Complete the Reset:

    • Release the reset button.
    • The LED will illuminate solid blue, indicating the reset is complete.
  4. Verify Reset:

    • Enter one of the default User Codes to confirm functionality.

Setting a New Programming Code

  1. Enter Default Programming Code:

    • On the keypad, enter the 6-digit default Programming Code.
    • The Schlage button will flash orange three times, and the lock will beep three times.
  2. Access Programming Mode:

    • Press the Schlage button.
  3. Initiate Code Change:

    • Press the number “3” on the keypad.
  4. Enter New Programming Code:

    • Input a new 6-digit Programming Code.
    • The Schlage button will flash orange three times, and the lock will beep three times.
  5. Confirm New Code:

    • Re-enter the new 6-digit Programming Code.
    • The Schlage button will illuminate green, and the lock will emit one long beep, confirming the change.

Important Considerations

  • Default Codes: Always keep a record of your default Programming and User Codes. These are essential for resetting and reprogramming your lock.

  • Post-Reset: After a factory reset, all previous configurations are erased. You’ll need to set up your lock anew, including adding User Codes and customizing settings.
